A
redirect is a relatively simple Web address that automatically takes a user to another (usually longer)
Web address. For example, newspapers and broadcast stations that want to refer their audiences to an area of their Web site may promote a shorter address that can be more easily remembered and typed. A redirect also can be used to "correct" users who type in a different address. For example, the Web address of The New York Times is
www.nytimes.com, but the Times also has the domain name
www.newyorktimes.com, which redirects users to the correct address. Some online services, such as
SnipURL and
TinyURL, offer quick, short redirects for everyday personal use.
