Brawling Baseball Players at Spring Training
UPDATE: Today's Yankees-Rays spring training game started with a bench-clearing brawl, showing that the hard feelings continue over last weekend's collision at home plate.
See coverage from the St. Petersburg Times and
MLB.com.
Here's my original post from earlier today:
There is a little stir going on here in Tampa Bay during spring training. At the root of the issue is how aggressive baseball players should be in pre-season games.
Over the weekend,
a Tampa Bay Rays player crashed into Yankee catcher Francisco Cervelli at home plate, breaking the catcher's right wrist.
The Rays said, in essence, "Hey, this is baseball and the players should be aggressive all the time." The Yanks responded, in essence, "Hey, this is spring training -- tone it down."
Here are two perspectives on the controversy, from the
St. Petersburg Times and New York's
Daily News.
Left out of this debate, I think, is the fan. I paid $15 a ticket for spring training games last week. I want to see a professional baseball game.
Bleacher Report gives fans a voice on the controversy.
USA Today also offered fans a vote.
The teams play again this afternoon.
