Using Flash Banners to Promote Online Content

La Tercera banner
Chilean news site La Tercera uses a Flash banner to promote current features. Click image to see it run.
In Chile, La Tercera is always looking for new ways to promote its online content. The latest promotion is a Flash banner that lets you interact with five stories, using number and arrows to switch between them. This banner appears "below the fold." I think it's an interesting stop for a user who has just seen the most important news. Nice and simple.

The Puerto Rican news site Endi.com takes a similar approach, offering a big Flash banner on top left corner of the front page. Visitors can click that to navigate the site's main sections. Each section heading offers links to current stories.

Similarly, washingtonpost.com runs an animated "rotating sidecar" box on the top left of its home page to promote current features.

What do you think of these animated approaches to promotion and navigation? Are they as usable and intuitive as they are visually engaging? Please comment below.
