Record Number of Miners Die: So What?

This YouTube video on Chinese mine disasters demonstrates the power of user-created media to highlight an issue.
One of the topics I cover in China are labor issues. Mining accidents occur at least a few times per week.

I was just writing a small piece on another record year of deaths in the mining industry, and I was wondering who would care. Last year close to 6,000 Chinese miners died, according to the official figures. Somehow, it just does not seem to matter anymore.

Then I discovered this recent YouTube video: a montage of photos and videos related to recent Chinese coal mining disasters, set to the Chinese national anthem and the Internationale. (Here's the supporting web page.) This, I think, demonstrates why online multi-media is so powerful: It allows us to easily add so much beyond mere writing skills.
