The We Media conference in Miami next month should be good. But should they be cluttering every page of the site with those cryptic viral linking icons? (below) |
This is a two-in-one tidbit, but the topics are indeed related.
First off, News pros may be interested in attending the We Media Miami conference, Feb. 7-9, 2007. This event will "explore and foster the use of digital media to build and improve real communities in a connected society."
It's the third We Media conference. The first two conferences (see Poynter coverage) generated generally good reviews. The group is run by Andrew Nachison and Dale Peskin, formerly of the American Press Institute and now of their own company, IFocos.
Second --and I've written about this before -- viral linking is getting downright silly.
Look near the bottom of the We Media conference overview page. There, you can post a link to that page in 25 social media services. Among these are Connotea, Smarking, Scuttle, Shadows and TailRank (all new to me). Also, there's Fark (sure doesn't seem like this We Media page is a fit with what Fark does) and Yahoo MyWeb.
Hey, I suppose if it's free, why not? And if it drives three extra page views -- again, why not? But... why?
Enough's enough, I think. Focus on what works and discard what doesn't. Isn't that what we've been told the Web is all about?
I've recently been appointed editor to the We Media conference...
