The censored Google.cn: A mistake, says Sergey Brin. |
The
Guardian reports that Google founders
Sergey Brin and
Larry Page admitted yesterday at the
2007 World Economic Forum Annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, that Google's decision to launch a censored search engine for China has damaged their company.
In 2005, Google launched a special Chinese search engine which censored results according to what Google perceived to be the touchy issues in China. This led to a backlash, since many Google users saw this as contradicting the company's famous slogan "Don't be evil."
As it turns out, in China the censored Google never gained much traction -- since uncensored search engines are easily available. Brin has been hinting that the Chinese Google could be scrapped.
