Google Founders Admit Mistake on Chinese Censorship

The censored Google.cn: A mistake, says Sergey Brin.
The Guardian reports that Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page admitted yesterday at the 2007 World Economic Forum Annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, that Google's decision to launch a censored search engine for China has damaged their company.

In 2005, Google launched a special Chinese search engine which censored results according to what Google perceived to be the touchy issues in China. This led to a backlash, since many Google users saw this as contradicting the company's famous slogan "Don't be evil."

As it turns out, in China the censored Google never gained much traction -- since uncensored search engines are easily available. Brin has been hinting that the Chinese Google could be scrapped.
