When people raise concerns about media consolidation, they tend to complain more about Viacom than Yahoo. But yesterday media blogger Amy Webb painted a striking picture of current consolidation in online media that could affect the news business -- and everyone else -- profoundly.

Webb's chart, Who Owns What v2.0 is worth a look as you consider who you might be working with or for in coming years. It focuses on online-media acquisitions by six key players: IAC, Yahoo, Google, AOL, Microsoft, and News Corp.

Says Webb: "The central figure in that picture is Google, which by the way is hedging $4 billion to gain open access to the wireless spectrum. The future of media isn't only about content, it's about delivery. While journos are busy bickering about whether or not to allow visitor comments on their web sites, other companies are moving full speed ahead with radically different business models. They're thinking broadly: aggregator + search + content + mobile + gaming = sustainability."

Incidentally, Google isn't even included in Columbia Journalism Review's Who Owns What media ownership resource.

Webb notes that her chart is far from complete, since there wasn't enough space to list every acquisition by these players. Which makes me think this list might be ripe for a wiki...
