Database Journalism, Deals, More...
Clark
MediaBerkman
Drew Clark discusses the Center for Public Integrity’s "Well Connected" project to track players in telecom, media, and technology.
Here are some more mini-Tidbits, from various sources on media and technology that I follow via my feed reader and track with my tidbits-fodder tag on del.icio.us:
  • Drew Clark on the Politics of Telecom, Media and Technology (MediaBerkman): I just listened to this -- Wow! If you want to be amazed at what kinds of information can be gathered and made public and searchable on an area of government policy, check out this talk by Drew Clark and discussion with Berkman Institute fellows.

  • Mogulus: At the Knight Digital Media Center panel I helped moderate a couple of weeks ago, Newsvine founder Mike Davidson predicted that the quality of contributed content would be improving due to better tools and services. Mogulus seems to fit with that prediction.

  • IPC buys trustedreviews.com (PDA: The Digital Content Blog,Guardian Unlimited): "Publisher IPC had paid an undisclosed sum for trustedreviews.com, a four-year old product review site staffed by 12 journalists. Covers 19 areas of gadgets and consumer electronics. All staff-written, as opposed to consumer-led reviews like Reevoo.com."

  • CondeNet's Modest Facebook Success (Silicon Alley Insider): "Nothing wrong with experimenting, and to Conde's credit, that's what they say they're doing. They've recently started selling ads on the app, via their nascent Flip social network."

  • Online Ad Bubbles And The Future Of The Search Economy (MediaPost): "Bubble Forensics Begin With Following The Money: While the outer form of the online ad industry has changed much since the late 1990's, its inner logic, especially how money flows through it, bears an uncanny similarity to the pre-bubble era 1997-2000."

  • Shaping Or Breaking Brands (MediaPost): "Sixty-two percent of consumers read consumer-written product reviews online. Of that group, over 80 percent say they have been directly influenced by the reviews: either influenced to buy the product they were researching, or switch to another brand."

  • Jason Calacanis Cold to Local Newspapers as Business (PJNet): Video interview: "Calacanis, CEO of Mahalo.com, a human powered search engine, and previously the co-founder of Weblogs, Inc. which sold for $30 million to AOL, talks about the future of local journalism. He thinks it is a tough business model."

  • Facebook: Love it or loathe it? (Magda's Web Creation Journal): "Newspapers have cobbled together accounts from data on profiles on social networking sites. They've taken Facebook journalism to another level: BBC's Newsnight program has created two Facebook groups to gather contacts for reporters & to build closer viewer relations."
