Palm Beach Post feature writer Mark Schwed, 52, died last week.
Mark Schwed, a long-time journo and former colleague of mine at UPI, died unexpectedly last week. His death has gotten the coverage it deserves from the paper where worked (The Palm Beach Post) and several other places. With one minor exception.

Schwed (who also worked for TV Guide, E!, the TV Guide Channel and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner) was clearly beloved at the Post, as both its coverage and the online guest book at Legacy.com show. He was only 52 when he died, and he left a lot of good work behind.

My very minor complaint about the coverage? Missing links.

In addition to Schwed's obituary, the Palm Beach Post published a special collection of excerpts from his stories, which ran both in print and online. I was quite surprised to see that no one went back through that excerpts page to add links to the full versions of those stories from the Post's online archives. it's reasonable to expect that readers would want to easily access the complete versions. (In contrast, the obit page does include a sidebar of links to selected Schwed stories.)

This isn't what I'd expect from a newspaper that's been extraordinarily smart about its online services -- especially its advertising services.

...Incidentally, here's another fine piece of writing by Schwed, whose family included several journalists.
