Podcast Success in China
"I still remember last year (in) September when I downloaded my first
Daily
Sourcecode by Adam Curry," says
Toodou.com co-founder and former financial controller Marc van der
Chijs. "'Why don't we start something like that in China?' I asked my friends."
Podcast company Toodou.com
has emerged from almost
nothing into one of China's fastest-growing companies, according to the Chinese edition
of Fortune magazine. Two friends now host 20,000
podcasts -- surprisingly in China mostly as videos.
Van der Chijs explains their current success: They're creating a very close online community, a
good relationship with the government, and clean content (no porn).
Volunteers, a part of the podcasting community, check production before they
go online and seem happy to do so.
After six months of programming, Toodou has developed into a leading podcast
host, doing a better job (I think) than the Chinese portals. This is a project that
started because Van der Chijs could not get his favorite music, and now it delivers enormous
potential.
You can listen to the conversation
here. (Please
excuse my loud voice and my guest's faint one; I will work on that.)
