Rounding the Bend Into 2006
I'm not always the first adopter when it comes to new technology, but I'm
faster than many and always wonder why I didn't switch sooner after the new
thing turns my life around. And over the past year (or so), TiVo (
Steve
Outing was way out in front on this blog on this), RSS feeds (remember
all those blog items here by
Amy Gahran?), and podcasts via my new iPod Nano
have become increasingly ingrained in my daily existence.
About TiVo: I've had one Cox Cable DVR box for at least a year, but I
keep filling up the memory (it only holds around 35 programs). So I
converted the other two digital boxes to DVR today.
About RSS feeds: I take mine through My Yahoo!, and they range from
E-Media Tidbits
(naturally!) to
Romenesko to
Jay Rosen's
PressThink
to
Jeff Jarvis'
Buzz Machine to
Jonathan Dube's
CyberJournalist.net to my
favorite cycling and hockey sites. In fact, I have almost too many RSS feeds
(more on that shortly).
About podcasts: I like my iPod Nano for portability (and the cool
factor except for the fact that it DOES scratch too easily), and the ability
to download my favorite
New York Times Select op-ed columnists (I'm waiting for equal treatment
for the sports columnists) as well as
NPR,
Slate,
NBC News, and
CBS News content, as podcasts get more time and attention from me than my
music. And I love
iTunes as an
audio jukebox.
So what do I have to look forward to in 2006?
Well, I've got to get all these new ways of organizing more information,
well, organized; I take 34 RSS feeds and 21 podcasts! And will I ever watch
all those programs I record on TiVo (now times three!)?
Kevin Maney,
USA Today's wonderful technology columnist,
writes that "RSS will become the primary way everyone accesses stuff
on the Web." Maney quotes author and consultan
Steve Waite: "RSS is
likely to take off in 2006 and could well displace e-mail as the killer app
on the Net."
So, at least I'm slightly ahead of that curve. But what about you?
