Wi-Fi Pricing Absurdities
I spent an hour at Boston's Logan Airport last week and was pleased to see the signs everywhere promising
Wi-Fi
access throughout the terminal. So I popped open the old laptop and
gave it a whirl. But the pricing scheme defeated me. The only way to
pay was $7.95 for 24-hour access. How dumb is that? Most visits to an
airport don't top an hour or two (or so we fervently hope!), so what is
wrong with charging by the hour? I would happily have paid $2.95 or
even $3.95 for an hour of service.
I haven't seen usage data on Logan, and maybe CEOs don't need to count
their pennies. But I would be willing to bet they would make more money
with lower hourly service fees than with one essentially useless
24-hour fee. It left me feeling that I would be leaving a lot of money
on the table to pay for 24 hours and use it only for one.
