Visitors Judge Websites at Super Speed
In just one-twentieth of a second, website visitors make aesthetic
judgments that influence the rest of their experience with a site, Canadian
researchers say.
That's a Web visitor won or lost in the blink an eye.
The study,
reported by Reuters, was published in the current issue of
Behavior and Information Technology, a
scientific journal. The author, Professor
Gitte Lindgaard, said, "It really
is just a physiological response so Web designers have to make sure they're
not offending users visually."
The study results do not offer the panacea that news site designers need,
however. This study does not show how to win a positive reaction from users,
Reuters reported. "When we looked at the websites that we tested, there is
really nothing there that tells us what leads to dislike or to like," said
Lindgaard, who is a psychology professor at Ottawa's Carleton University.
