More about Thumbnails in Picture Galleries
On March 15,
I mentioned here how I preferred thumbnail picture galleries over galleries that merely sat "next." However, I also wrote that the "next" approach would probably generate more clicks, and that was probably why
Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) still uses it.
Seems I was right -- and the difference in clicks may be dramatic.
Erik Bolstad, project manager of digital services at NRK, told me, "We tried the thumbnails, and the clicks went down more than 60 percent. So we decided against them for that reason. But at the time we were very interested in clicks. Nowadays we care more about the total experience of visiting [our site]."
Given that there has been a shift in focus, I would guess NRK will do well to reintroduce thumbnail photo galleries. As I wrote in my last posting, it seems like something that should have been done a long time ago.
