PBS: NOW Online's Government Secrecy Resources
Tonight the PBS investigative program NOW will highlight "the erosion of open government in America through the stories of whistleblowers."
Joel Schwartzberg, NOW's senior producer for new media, told E-Media Tidbits that complementing the TV broadcast are several
special online features, including:
- A comprehensive look at the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), including state-by state resources and information on how to use the law yourself.
- Information on the levels of "classified" and "unclassified" information.
- A comprehensive list of links and resources, including links to the memorial Web sites for the two U.S. soldiers profiled. The military misrepresented the truth about their deaths to their parents.
- An update on the NSA wiretapping story.
- A personal account from senior correspondent Maria Hinojosa.
This is just one of many examples of news organizations and others using Sunshine Week and online media as excellent tools to increase awareness of government secrecy, and to provide resources and education to help individuals address this issue directly.
This week, I've been highlighting in this blog several other notable Sunshine Week online efforts. I've collected far more links than I've mentioned so far, and the suggestions keep coming in. (Thanks, and e-mail me if you'd like to suggest some notable online Sunshine Week projects I haven't yet mentioned.)
Next week, I'll be writing a Poynter Online article giving an overview of some of the most noteworthy online Sunshine Week efforts, since there are too many to list comfortably in a posting to this weblog.
