Cliche Watch, via Google News
You can put Google News to all sorts of uses. On Sunday I searched Google News for some of the most overused phrases in journalism. Apparently, they are still alive and well.
(Pardon the cliché...)
- Bus plunge: Recently used in stories from Chile, Turkey and Nepal.
-
Rain fails/failed to dampen: "...fun for Worcester revelers," :the spirit of those who showed up," "the festive spirit." (Three uses for each)
- Trade barbs: Cited as occurring recently between Kadima-Likud, Blagjovech-rivals, candidates, Gatorade-Powerade, firefighter-union-city (a three-way barb trade!), candidates for assessors office ("Friction between three -- ouch! -- Republicans..."), two leaders (from The New York Times!), France-Ivory Coast, and many more.
- Bumper crop: 433 uses cited, including a surplus of second basemen, businesses, births, Barry Manilow music (God help us!), cocaine, opium, prospects, drugs, pot (marijuana), new North American pharmaceutical biomedical companies, etc.
The good news: Nothing today turned up in a search for "family outing ends in tragedy." However, I did find one story about a man who drowned at a family outing.
