Describing Someone with an "Also Bought" List
People have always defined themselves according to the music they listen to, the movies they watch and so on. However, it has always been quite a mess trying to name all the bands you like when someone asks you: "What are you into?"

Journalists have defined people by pointing to a small set of features like a haircut, a jacket and what's on their iPod: pars pro toto. Now take a look at this New York Magazine article, "Up with Grups" -- specifically the page 2 sidebar, "The Four Stages of Grupitude."

In item 2 on that list, "Beginner grup: Listens to..." reporter Adam Sternbergh didn't simply list bands. Instead, he wrote: "anything found on the 'Listeners Also Bought' list for the Killers' 'Hot Fuss' on iTunes."

Now that's a creative way of describing a person. The only thing is that such a list will change according to country. The list I am seeing includes Norwegian bands that I don't think you'll find on your American or Brazilian list. But that really strengthens the whole picture, since it incorporates local flavor.

By the way, and this may serve as disclosure: I am 34, and as soon as the snow melts here in Norway, I'll be reaching for those red Adidas sneakers. And I will not shut up about Death Cab for Cutie's latest CD, Plans. Why do you think Google News alerted me about Sternbergh's article?
