NYC: Online Careers Power Lunch
A couple of hours ago I participated in a fun event in New York City -- the "Online Careers Power Lunch," sponsored by the NY chapter of the
Online News Association
and the
Columbia School of Journalism
. I'll be doing a more detailed writeup later (plus a complete podcast of the event). But for now, here are a few of my favorite quotes from my other participants:
Adam Glenn
, consultant, former
ABCNews.com
senior producer, and E-Media Tidbits contributor: "When I started in this business, reporters were pretty much lone wolves. You worked solo, then handed over your product to the editor and let go of it. Creating news for online media is much more about collaboration. You work with a motley array of journalists, geeks, designers, etc. You're working with them right from the start, respecting their knowledge, and together figuring out how to best present news to the audience. It's more than a skill set -- it's a mindset."
(Disclosure: Adam Glenn is also my partner in
I, Reporter
.)
Andrew Baron
, founder of the daily vlog and commercial podcast service
Rocketboom
: "Any time I watch TV news, I think: it just took me 30 minutes to watch 20 minutes of news. I could have become more aware of what's going on in the world by spending just 30 seconds online."
Michael Vizard
, Senior vice president and editorial director,
Ziff Davis Enterprise Group
: "When I went to journalism school, we print guys had our own clique; the audio/video guys had their own clique. We didn't hang out with each other, we just stood around giving each other the hairy eyeball. Today, when I hire, I'm looking for someone who can write
and
do audio/video content. If you show up and you're a great writer but you don't have multimedia skills, and another guy shows up who's not quite as good a writer but he can create audio and video, I'll hire the more versatile person."
