Last week I pointed out some of the best sites for high school students. Next week I'll look at useful sites for journalism educators.
Here are some good ones designed for college students:
TIPS & TRENDS
The Associated Collegiate Press is a division of the National Scholastic Press Association aimed at college students. Like the NSPA's site, the ACP offers news, tips, and information about conventions and contests. The Trends in College Media page is a great way to keep on top of, well, trends in college media. The site has a handy jobs database just for college students. And the Student Media Sourcebook is also a great tool for college students, with links to more than 200 resources.
NEWS & VIEWS
The National Student News Service is the oldest student newswire in the country and the only nonprofit one by and for students. The service produces a bimonthly newswire containing news articles, features and opinion pieces. The newswire is available free of charge on the World Wide Web.
COLLEGIATE TOP TEN LIST
In addition to the features mentioned last week, the Student Press Law Center offers the College Top Ten, a look at the 10 questions college student journalists most frequently ask about their rights.
LOOKIN' GOOD
The importance of news design is often overlooked by young journalists. The Student Society for News Design holds contests, recognizes the best in student news design, offers useful links, and hosts a discussion list.
STAY TUNED
Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc., is an association representing students involved in radio, television, and Webcasting. It runs an e-mail list, sponsors awards and holds conventions.
WHO, WHAT, WHERE
The Daily Beacon at the University of Tennessee has built a nice database of college newspapers around the country. Yahoo! also has a good list.
HERE TO SERVE YOU
The Society for Collegiate Journalists is the nation's oldest organization designed solely to serve college journalists. The site has information on the SCJ's awards and conventions, and free archives of its newsletter, The Reporter.
AWARDS AND JOBS
The Society of Professional Journalists offers Mark of Excellence awards to collegiate journalists around the country. The site also offers a career center with a good list of internship opportunities, but you must be a member to access it.
DO THE RIGHT THING
Francis A. Rizzo III, a professor at Hofstra University, has put together a great guide to "Ethics on campus: Journalism & college newspapers." It's never to early to start thinking about ethical issues.
