One Laptop Per Reporter
Colin Benedict paid a visit to Poynter's booth at the RTNDA@NAB convention. Colin is the managing editor at WISC-TV in Madison, Wisconsin and an alum of the Poynter Leadership Academy. His station just picked up three regional Murrow awards, including Overall Excellence, so he's a happy guy. While catching up on life, we talked about this new SuperVision blog and little Flip Ultra cam I'm using. I told him how easy it has been for me to grab videos and upload them to my laptop.

That's when Colin told me he'd removed the desktop computers from his reporters' work spaces and issued all seven of them laptops. It wasn't just an equipment switch. It was a step toward changing the newsroom culture. Listen to Colin share his reasoning and the impact he's already seen:

Note: If you're receiving this via e-mail newsletter and have trouble viewing the video, please use the video player on the SuperVision page.

What kind of costs accompanied this culture change? Colin told me the laptops cost about 2K apiece, and the broadband cards for transmission run about fifty to sixty dollars a month per machine. I suspect his next purchase might be a couple of small, web-friendly cameras, like the one that captured his story for SuperVision.
