The Hotel TV Turnoff
Permit me a modest rant about improved technology and reduced customer service:

News leaders, print and broadcast, lived in hotels last week for their RTNDA/NAB and ASNE/NAA/NEXPO conventioneering. Some of those hotels boast the latest flat-screen TV systems as an amenity. Maybe it's just me, but when I'm treated to one of these sets on my road trips, it's an exercise in frustration.

I'm a news junkie -- in need of quick fixes. I want to zip from channel to channel, comparing and contrasting. I want the news channels I get at home: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, CNN Headline News, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox, Univision; plus Comedy Central for Stewart and Colbert.

What do I get? In Vegas, the cable newsers I found on my Hilton set were CNN, CNN Headline and Univision. Maybe the management was betting that fewer viewing options would drive me from the room into a casino.

What else?
  • Remote controls that require pinpoint accuracy to score an "on"
  • Slugglsh channel changing
  • Channel numbers without titles -- leaving me to play "guess the show and the network"
  • Having to hunt for a hard-copy channel guide

I don't want to beat up on Hilton, because I've encountered this turnoff in a variety of hotels. So, here's my plea to the hospitality industry: please, make your TV setups more user-friendly, especially for us road warriors who crave news.

Now, don't get me started about those wireless access charges...
