New York Times
A "Talk to the Newsroom" question for NYT deputy managing editor for digital journalism
Jonathan Landman:
Q. You are one of the very few people to come out of the Jayson Blair scandal with your career intact. Indeed, it could be said that you were the only one willing to see through the lies. Was that hard and has it been hard for you there at the NYT since? -- Dean Monroe
A. Please! Let’s not exaggerate. There were lots of people at The Times who acted honestly and honorably during the period of the Blair scandal. The vast majority, in fact. I have been treated extravagantly well since then, and indeed during my entire 19 years at the paper.
It's important to understand that the events of that period were not mainly about Blair. He became a catalyst for a staff rebellion against two of its leaders. They are both gone. I thought the internal inquiry was extremely well handled and resulted in beneficial reforms, including some that make tougher demands of everyone, young and not-so.
Can we talk about the Web now?
