John S. Knight said a 1978 interview, conducted just before his 84th birthday: "I dislike Washington. I dislike anything that reeks of phonies and insincerity and shenanigans and double-dealing and all that sort of thing." He also said 28 years ago: "I'm concerned about the future of newspapers. I'm concerned about the loss of readership. ... In general, papers are not gaining in circulation. And the rates are higher, all the time, and the type is smaller, so what you're doing is that you're charging the reader more and giving him less. Now is that smart merchandising? I don't think so." ||
Alberto Ibarguen: "John S. Knight died 25 years ago Friday. This is a good time to reflect on his values as we stand, ironically, nine days before the end of Knight Ridder."
