Ball State journalism professor
Scott Reinardy says from his first job at the Aberdeen American News, he realized sportswriters were treated as second-class citizens in the world of journalism. "I understand it but I didn't accept it or like it. At every daily newspaper where I worked -- and I worked at five of them -- it was the same. Sports was considered the 'toy department' and either did not want to write serious news or wasn't allowed to write it. ... That's why I advise all my sportswriters to be a news reporter first. Learn how news does it and then when you go to sports you can apply that knowledge."
