At Monday's "funeral" for Knight Ridder, CEO
Tony Ridder started to thank those he'd worked with, but became too choked up to finish. "Me? I didn't cry, but I did mourn," writes
Mike Cassidy. "I thought about the February 1982 day that I walked into the Boca Raton News, a tiny Knight Ridder paper in Florida. It was my first daily newspaper job and I felt like I'd been hired by the New York Yankees of newspaper companies. Sure, I was a utility player with a backwater minor league team, but I worked for Knight Ridder. I couldn't have been prouder."
