New York Times
CJR Daily managing editor
Steve Lovelady and his deputy,
Bryan Keefer. quit today after Columbia j-school dean
Nicholas Lemann told them he's cutting the online budget nearly in half. "Nick has decided to spend the money on a direct-mail campaign for the magazine, in hopes of raising subscription revenue," says Lovelady. "To me, that sounds like something out of the 19th century." Lemann says: "I have the same issue [financing a website that's free] that everyone else in journalism has, and this [subscription campaign] is our best lunge toward a solution."
