"The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" had a lengthy and informative segment on British Petroleum's pipeline problems, says ombud Michael Getler, but a handful of viewers still wonder if BP's sponsorship of the news show affected coverage. One writes: "The underwriting of the 'NewsHour' has led to a sorry situation. Is PBS so obtuse that they do not recognize this? Do they not realize that it is not enough to not be influenced by a conflict of interest, but that it is also essential to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest?"
