Fred Hiatt acknowledges that endorsements can make life difficult for newsroom staffers even though they have nothing to do with the picks. "Some newspapers do not endorse political candidates, and I can understand why," he writes. "But I think it's one of our most important responsibilities -- one we take very seriously."
