Chicago Tribune
No, say Tribune ombud
Timothy McNulty and editor
Ann Marie Lipinski. "We were mindful of separating our efforts as employers working on
Paul [Salopek's] release from the work of the journalists covering the story," says the editor. "We also discussed along the way the propriety of engaging various government officials on Paul's behalf. Our belief was that he was a U.S. citizen in peril and his being a journalist did not and should not put him at a disadvantage in obtaining the sort of help that would be available to non-journalists in similar trouble."
