Poynter Online | New York Times
President
Gerald Ford wasn't interested in being interviewed for
"the death story," as he called it, but
James Naughton -- former New York Times reporter and retired Poynter president -- eventually got him to cooperate. "The ground rules were that nothing he would say in the interview could be published until his death, writes Naughton. But Ford didn't say anything remarkable. "At the time, I considered the interview a failure. But I've come to realize that it perfectly reflected the central characteristic of Jerry Ford: He was what he seemed to be."
