This year's Rhode Island Statewide Spelling Bee was canceled after the Belo-owned Journal decided not to sponsor the event, which cost "something in excess of $5,000." Providence Newspaper Guild president
John Hill says: "This is just incomprehensible. I don’t see how you could have an event that is more connected to a newspaper’s mission, which is reading, and learning about the world, and expanding your vocabulary."
