A NYT reader says: "It is incredible to me that someone of non-Arabic descent and lacking in Arabic language skills, such as [war correspondent Richard] Oppel, can effectively verify statements made to him by Iraqi locals. I would like to understand how the Times is comfortable these stories are credible (vs. just plausible)." The Times' Andrea Kannapell says there's "a solid bank of translators who have years of experience working with our reporters, so if a reporter has any question about a translation, they can ask another translator to review the tape of the interview."
