The Mercury News editorial board's discussions about Iraq have changed now that
Stephen E. Wright's son has enlisted. "[Before] the discussions were mainly about how and when to write about the conflict," says the editorial page editor. "But now we talk about the war, via my son, almost daily. ... In a far more personal way, we discuss the impact on families and friends, the political maneuvering and the lack of progress in bringing stability to the country. What we don't talk about are the daily news stories about soldiers killed in action."
