Matthew Purdy says the department has 12 permanent reporters and editors. "I'm happy to say that despite the competition and economic uncertainty that is rocking the newspaper business, our department is bigger than it has ever been." He adds: "In three years at this job no one here has ever asked me to justify the expense of investigative reporting."
