"I've never said, 'I'm an executive, I just oversee what's going on," says
Susan Goldberg, who leaves the San Jose Mercury News to become Plain Dealer editor. "I am not a gentlewoman journalist. I am much more of a roll-up-your-sleeves kind of journalist. ... The more I can be involved in what's actually in the paper, the happier I am."
On calling journalists at home to give them layoff news: "In Dallas, when they did layoffs, everybody was at work, and they were at their desks, and somebody's phone would ring because it was the appointed hour.
