Reporters at the San Jose Mercury News earn $20,000 to $25,000 more per year than journalists at other MediaNews papers. "If MediaNews can keep its combined East Bay operation union-free, it could later merge it with the South Bay papers, decertify the Merc's union, and start cutting salaries," writes
Robert Gammon. An Oakland Trib guild officer tells him: "I think they intend to make the Bay Area the model for union busting."
