The New Republic asked freelance illustrator Ward Schumaker do the art for its "What the F***?/Why We Curse" story. What he turned in was called "awesome" by the art director, but the magazine still decided against using Schumaker's illustration. "They're just chicken, I think," he says. Editor Franklin Foer says the illustration is "so visceral that I was worried it would deflect too many people from entering into a wonderful piece about profanity."
