Jack Shafer discovered the plagiarism while considering the Feb. 23 piece for his "Stupidest Drug Story of Week" award. Reporter Alexei Barrionuevo says he got the two passages via a Google search. He doesn't specifically recall taking the lines from the Herald story, managing editor Jill Abramson tells Shafer, but he doesn't dispute that it's very likely his source was the newspaper.
