Sam Zell has said that his lectures to Tribune journalists were intended to shake them out of complacency. "Maybe so, but I'd heard enough," writes Los Angeles Times veteran Joel Sappell. "Soon, I was sitting in my first buyout briefing ... I couldn't see myself working at the L.A. Times even two years down the road. My fear of leaving was finally overtaken by a stronger belief that, like others before me, I could find both work and a workplace of which I could be proud again."
