Register-Guard publisher Tony Baker says the paper -- Oregon's second largest -- lost several million dollars in 2008, "and it's imperative it never happen again." He's asking the family-owned paper's three unions to "work with us to reduce some of the ongoing expenses in their contracts, namely in wages, health benefits, pension and 401(k) costs and mileage reimbursements."
