Los Angeles Magazine under Kit Rachlis has plenty of best-of lists and service features, but David Carr says the editor -- a former Los Angeles Times staffer -- "has made room for deeply reported articles on stories than have nothing to do with the actress of the moment." Rachlis, who is in his third year of editing Los Angeles, "has inherited this extraordinary fixer-upper," says Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith. "It will take time to do the repairs, but I think the ownership realizes that and is willing to wait while he builds a core constituency for a magazine about ideas."
