Rabbi: Handshake column shows Cohen's ignorant, but not an antisemite
The Forward
In last Sunday's "The Ethicist" column, a woman wrote that she was offended when her real-estate agent refused to shake hands, saying that as an Orthodox Jew he didn't touch women. Should I tear up the contract? she asked. Randy Cohen's response -- "I believe you should tear up your contract" -- brought in hundreds of angry e-mails, reports Alana Newhouse. One rabbi says of the column: "I thought it showed a stunning lack of appreciation and responsibility for Orthodoxy Jewry." Another says of Cohen: "He's ignorant, but not hateful. I don't think he's an antisemite."
