Leonard Downie Jr. didn't break any news in his
online appearance, but the Post's top editor deserves credit for answering questions about
Bob Woodward, says
Rem Rieder. "That openness comes as no surprise. To his credit, Downie has never been known to duck an interview. We've called him countless times during the 14 years I've edited AJR. And he has always taken the calls, no matter how uncomfortable the situation. I can't say that about every top editor."
ANOTHER VIEW: Downie's chat "was not an exercise in media transparency, but an effort at damage control that would have made
Scott McClennan envious," says
Paul Lukasiak.
>
"What was instructive about [the chat] was not what Downie had to say but rather the questions asked,"
writes
Vaughn Ververs.
