Steven A. Smith wonders: How might the New York Times' reputation have fared during the
Judith Miller saga if
Bill Keller and his team had gone fully and transparently public with the details of their dilemma? At the Post,
Leonard Downie Jr.seems to have taken a step toward newsroom transparency, and away from "fortress newsroom" by talking with
Bob Woodward, says Smith. "Transparency -- which includes being open about mistakes -- can kill rumors and conspiracy theories that breed distrust. It can soften criticism, or at least direct it to the appropriate targets."
