Harvey Silverglate says a variety of federal statutes, from the Espionage Act on down, give
President Bush ample means to prosecute the Times reporters who got the domestic wiretaps scoop, as well as the editors who facilitated publication. "Even executive editor
Bill Keller and publisher
Arthur Sulzberger Jr. could become targets -- a startling possibility, just the threat of which would serve as a deterrent to the entire Fourth Estate."

From WP national political editor John Harris' chat:
Charlotte, N.C.: Mr. Harris, What is your opinion in regards to the recent Justice Investigation into the NSA leak and the allegations that the White House knew that the program of domestic surveilence was illegal?
John F. Harris: I have to separate my personal opinion from the paper's obligations to cover a news story, and an investigation of this sort is news. But, it's true that I am never personally enthusiastic about prosecutorial investigations into news gathering. It strikes me as an invidious process that could have a chilling effect on how we get information and inform the public.
