David Rosenbaum, 63, who worked for the Times for 35 years, was struck in the head and robbed Friday night while walking near his home in Northwest Washington. No arrests have been made. "David was one of the most accomplished journalists of his generation in Washington,"
says Washington bureau chief Philip Taubman. "He could do anything, and he did so many things brilliantly. He was an all-time great, versatile reporter who could tackle any subject." (Read Taubman's
memo.)

Deaths in Chicago: Tribune newsman
Allan Johnson died Friday of complications from a brain hemorrhage. Johnson, who recently became a father for the second time, "was witty in the most gloriously droll way," says Trib editor
Ann Marie Lipinski. "And no matter how chaotic the newsroom, he was a rock-solid presence." |
Jack Mabley, who wrote more than 12,000 columns for four Chicago papers,
is dead at 90.
