Dean Singleton's MediaNews Group is working with private equity firms Vestar, Madison Dearborn and Onyx, which specialize in corporate buyouts. They would raise the capital necessary for smaller, privately held MediaNews to buy Knight Ridder. "McClatchy's strategy is harder to figure out," writes Carey. "It is half the size of Knight Ridder but was not accompanied by a private equity firm when it met with Knight Ridder."
