Pittsburgh City Paper
Quotes from Allan Block, chairman of Block Communications, which owns the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade:
* "We have people that have been on the [P-G] staff for decades and are no longer productive. Any business, no matter how it's doing … shouldn’t have more people than we need. [The P-G] has more people than we need."
* Whatever problems we have, it's not the Tribune-Review. That's at best an annoyance. I'm not saying I'm glad it's there, I'm saying if it weren't there at all, we’d still be facing the same problems. It’s not the Tribune-Review, it’s the Internet. It’s the weak economy in the Pittsburgh region."
From P-G executive editor David Shribman:
* "Every editor always says, 'Despite these layoffs, we can put together a super newspaper.' I'm going to say that too. I'm hoping, like everybody else in this region, and every newspaper editor … that revenues perk up nicely."
* "We all hope that there will be many years of Block family ownership. But the paper's not for sale right now. If you’re working at a Knight Ridder newspaper, do you have more or less security than if you’re working at a Block paper? You have far less."
