Port Folio Weekly
David Chernicky, who covered the police beat for the Tribune's Newport News Daily Press for 25 years, was let go last November. "I was numb and speechless," he writes. "After a pause, I asked [editor
Ernie] Gates how the newspaper could afford cutting positions, noting that the newsroom was already too lean in editorial positions. He didn’t disagree. He simply said the paper needed to be 'leaner.'" Chernicky's severance deal forbids him from criticizing Tribune Co., but he warns: "Newspapers may cause their own 'deaths' as they continue to cut reporting jobs."
