Howell Raines' talk, attended by 23 Nieman fellows, was given special off-the-record status, reports
Gabriel Sherman. The fellows were told by e-mail before the session that no outside guests were permitted at the former Times executive editor's chat. One fellow says: "We all hoped to get some insights into his tenure at The Times. We hoped that would occur. It just didn't. He was so guarded, a lot of us were frustrated." (Last item.)
